Hello everyone, I'm just getting started with microsoldering and am trying to fix broken AM5 sockets. I've managed to repair around three of them, but recently came across an x670E motherboard. The socket had bent pins, so it wasn't working properly. It used to POST by shorting the startup pins, but now the CPU light is red and the RAM is yellow. I replaced the socket with a BGA station from AliExpress (IR6500 BGA). I learned most of the steps from YouTube tutorials. I removed the old board, cleaned the circuit, added lead around, cleaned excess with copper band, and finally installed a new socket with BGA heat. It cooled down and after installing the CPU, RAM, and PSU cables, it turned on for about four seconds. Then it stopped immediately, emitting a burnt smell. The CPU and the new socket burned out. Now, without any components, the motherboard still POSTs briefly for around three seconds before shutting off. I'm worried this might be due to the plastic melting around the pins, possibly because of too much heat or flux dropping onto the pins when touching the CPU and power. I don’t know if the CPU will work on another motherboard yet, as I don’t have spare parts. This was a costly mistake—I’d appreciate your advice.

P.S. The plastic around the socket melted a bit more than it should have, and I think some flux might have dropped onto the pins. Could that have caused the short?

Could the socket you installed be defective? There might be an issue with the grounding there, although that seems unlikely.
