Hello
I’m attempting to fix my friend’s laptop and need some assistance.
The problem began when the machine suddenly stopped working one day. Then it would only start up briefly — sometimes it would connect to the BIOS, but then shut down right away. My friend tried using a BIOS recovery tool, but it kept failing at 91%.
When I got the laptop, it automatically entered BIOS recovery on startup and attempted to reinstall the BIOS, yet it crashed again at the same 91% point. At first, I thought there might be a hardware issue because the initial crash looked random and the system became unstable later. But since it always fails at the exact same stage during recovery, I’m beginning to suspect the BIOS itself is damaged.
I attempted to use a USB drive with the BIOS_IMG.rcv file, but the system didn’t recognize it — it just continued trying the internal BIOS recovery.
Now I’m wondering if a Windows firmware update might have corrupted the motherboard. Is there any chance we need to flash the BIOS externally using a programmer?
Laptop specifics:
Dell XPS 15 9510
Intel i7, RTX 3050 Ti

My friend attempted a BIOS recovery but kept failing at 91%. This might indicate the BIOS chip is damaged. If reflashing doesn't work, replacing the BIOS chip with a new one would be necessary. You mentioned the laptop remains in BIOS recovery mode; using an older BIOS version might help restore access to the OS GUI.

The BIOS EEPROM could be malfunctioning, which would stop a successful recovery even if other steps are followed correctly.
