I've been playing on this PC for a couple of years, and recently after a Windows Update, my FPS dropped significantly—from 30 to 20 or more during combat. Previously, it ran smoothly at 30 to 20 when many other players were online, but now it's nearly unplayable. It's an HP laptop with Windows 11 installed last year.

Processor: Intel® Core™ i5-9300H @ 2.40GHz
Installed RAM: 8.00 GB (7.84 GB available)
System: 64-bit OS, x64 processor
GPU: NVIDIA GTX 1050 – still recognized as Windows 10 (unusual but noted)

Test results:
- Ran updates again
- Checked driver version and Windows Update for fixes
- Executed sfc /scannow – no issues found
- Cleaned update folder
- Performed defrag on all drives and ran optimization tool
- Set GPU to prioritize maximum performance
- Enabled low latency mode (Ultra)
- Image scaling remains disabled

I can achieve up to 70 FPS in games like STO, DCUO, Guild Wars1/2 while playing solo or with distant players. However, once I approach a crowd or an NPC, the FPS plummets to around 2, usually staying between 6 and 7 during combat. I suspect the GPU isn’t increasing performance enough, possibly due to the game’s demands not being met or some other factor. I’m not sure if the GPU is compensating or if there’s something wrong with detection.

This is my current issue with the PC. Thanks in advance for any help.

Check your SKU for any pending BIOS updates on your HP laptop. Also, use DDU to remove all remaining GPU driver files, then reinstall the GPU driver from Nvidia's support site using an elevated command—right-click the installer and select Run as Administrator.

Still waiting to run ddu after the latest update caused a crash. Needed a system restore. Now it's on my radar.

Not yet completed a DDU. More issues needing additional restarts. I’ll skip the details and just note the PC is now working with a new Windows 10 install from scratch. The problem continues...

I thought it could be steam so I decided to run a test without the overlay active. It kept clipping like old rusty scissors. Then I attempted an FPS test outside of Steam.

Based on that reference point, I believe your processor is getting too hot.
