Have any people swapped out the thermal pads on a PS4?
I’m about to replace it because my cooler sounds like a jet engine on steroids. It needs all the dust removed completely. The original pads are 1mm thick, while the GC Extreme pads I own are only 0.5mm. I don’t want to disassemble the whole thing if they won’t provide enough contact, so I’d prefer to wait until new ones arrive and I can use the PS4 for a bit longer.
Has anyone done this before and confirmed that 0.5mm pads work?
You should be careful because sometimes these systems use coolers with particular thermal pad thicknesses. Choosing a thinner pad or thermal paste can lead to improper contact, causing overheating. If you decide to try this, always test-seat the cooler with the new pads to ensure proper connection.
I tried using Thermal Grizzly Minus Pad 8
The pad sizes are 9x9mm, but they should fit 10x10mm squares. They need to be 1mm thick or the PS4 will overheat because they’re too thin or too thick, and there isn’t enough pressure on the APU
Here’s a video of me doing it:
