Repeated startup errors and crashes on the 7900 XT device
I'm facing a tough situation and need help with this big problem. Recently I upgraded to a 7900 XT, replacing my GTX 1070 Ti. Yesterday I installed the GPU, SSD, and power supply. All system specs are listed below. I'm using Windows 10 with MSI x470 Gaming Plus as the motherboard. The CPU is AMD 3700X, RAM is Corsair Vengeance 32GB at 3200MHz, and the GPU is Sapphire Pulse 7900 XT. My PSU is Cooler Master 850W, and I have a 120GB Samsung SSD (Boot drive) and a 500GB WD black NVMe 1TB HDD. I installed everything yesterday and booted into my 120GB drive. I ran the drivers but kept the old Nvidia ones installed because I haven't upgraded much and didn’t realize I needed to remove them with DDU. The main problems were games failing to launch and errors like “no updated GPU drivers” or missing 3D support (games worked for Overwatch 2, Diablo 4, Valorant).
I decided to start a clean boot using the new 1TB SSD, and everything ran smoothly. I installed the latest drivers with AMD Adrenaline, and all games worked perfectly. Streaming also performed without issues. Now, the next day there are more problems I need advice on. My PC kept blue-screening and showing strange errors: ATTEMPTED_WRITE_TO_READONLY_MEMORY KMODE_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED 0xc000007b, UNEXPECTED_STORE_EXCEPTION DPC_WATCHDOG_VIOLATION SYSTEM_SERVICE_EXCEPTION, and an orange screen with white vertical lines.
This instability has been really frustrating. I’ve tried various troubleshooting steps—formatted the new drive, reinstalled Windows 10 from scratch, even booted into a clean install—but nothing resolved it. I’m seeking guidance now. This is the first time I’ve dealt with so many issues. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
If there are any fixes available, let me know. If not, I might have to keep the 7900 XT and opt for the 4070 instead.
What hardware is currently set up in your setup? You noted a fresh installation on a 1TB SSD, but were other devices still connected? It’s likely the system functioned normally after the Windows update, though you stopped it. The next morning, when you restarted, it attempted to load Windows from another drive—likely the faulty 120GB SSD from earlier. Wishing you success!
All connections remain intact. I made sure to start from the new 1TB SSD instead of the 120GB one. It booted up properly after a few attempts, and I played two games without any problems. After restarting, I noticed Windows automatically detected issues and brought me back to blue screens again.
Attempt to delete the 120GB from your system. Frequently you instruct your computer to start from a different drive, but the BIOS interprets the bootloader from that drive and launches Windows from another. This causes a major issue when both operating systems are installed on the same machine.
I also tried this approach and had no success. I'm currently checking if lowering my BIOS version might resolve the problem. So far, I've experimented with these setups: 7900 XT paired with a 1070 TI 120 GB drive connected to a 1 TB drive, and vice versa. I've also used either the 7900 XT or 1 TB drive with one GPU connected. Blue screens have appeared when booting from either storage option, especially when only one drive is active. Additional issues include Windows blue screen during reset and clean install, and Windows displaying "my pin isn't available" while preventing changes. At first I assumed the problem was with the 7900 XT, but since my old GTX 1070 TI also had similar issues after a BIOS update, it seems the motherboard, SSD, or power supply might be affected.
It might be another issue. Adjusting parts could slightly affect your RAM or tighten a power cord. At this stage, it seems your boot drive might have damaged files. Could you try erasing it and starting fresh with a clean Windows setup?
It seems I identified a possible problem with my BIOS version. I reverted to the 2020 version and successfully booted without issues. The 120GB drive is connected, and I’m starting from the 1TB drive, everything appears to be functioning properly. I’ll update tomorrow if anything changes. Appreciate your advice throughout!
