Problem: My computer frequently crashes or freezes during gameplay, especially for Apex Legends and occasionally Ark. It also slows down unexpectedly without any apparent cause. Once frozen, I can still hear someone in Discord, but they can’t respond once it stops working. Powering off takes a long time; loading the system screen takes about a minute, yet opening apps normally takes 10 to 15 minutes. Despite extensive troubleshooting and searches, a permanent fix hasn’t been found. I’ve shared my issue on r/buildapc and followed their suggestions—updating drivers, cleaning storage, and resetting the PC. These steps helped temporarily (for days) until I started installing new software like Discord, Google, and Steam again. System specs: Windows 10 64-bit, Radeon RX 580, Intel i5-9400, 16GB RAM (Corsair Vengeance 2x8 DDR4 at 3200MHz), ASUS Prime Z390-A motherboard with LGA1151, Intel 8th/9th Gen, ATX, DDR4, HDMI, M.2 USB 3.1 Gen2, Gigabit LAN, Corsair iCUE H100i Elite cooler, EVGA 700 BQ (80+ Bronze, 700W), semi-modular 1TB SSD. I’m unsure about the SSD brand beyond storage capacity, as it was included in a prebuilt unit and only the CPU and GPU were transferred.

Initially I suspected insufficient or unstable RAM. I’ve taken apart a fairly costly system that showed signs of frustration for several months, then sent the motherboard back for an RMA to determine if the problem was with the RAM all along. Verify your RAM part number or SKU against the manufacturer’s QVL list for that board and CPU. Some experts disagree, but evidence suggests it can matter—possibly due to rank differences (single-rank vs dual-rank). If confirmed, you might need to reinstall Windows, assuming the SSD also serves as the boot drive. Updated August 8, 2022 by An0maly_76 Added more details
