Remove Supermicro X11DPL-I BIOS without the CPU
You can update your BIOS without a CPU by using a USB-based BIOS updater tool or by connecting the motherboard to a network and downloading the latest BIOS files from the manufacturer's website.
The update process requires a functional CPU and sufficient memory on the board. Checking the bios footnotes, there’s no reference to updates for specific processors. Only the following is supported: "2nd Gen Intel® Xeon® Scalable Processors and Intel® Xeon® Scalable Processors, Dual Socket LGA-3647 (Socket P) supported, CPU TDP support Up to 140W TDP, 2 UPI up to 10.4 GT/s."
It's possible I'm mistaken, but you might achieve this via IPMI without using the CPU.
They really need to charge a premium for this product. I checked Supermicro’s site and saw it listed at $27, which isn’t bad but might still feel excessive since it shouldn’t be hidden unless necessary.
