Sorry for the confusion, but I'm really concerned. I attempted to create a new partition, followed all the instructions, but the partition remains unusable (it's marked as corrupted). Now I have 500GB of unnecessary space on my hard drive. Do you know how to free that space? Also, the VHD file is being used by the system when I try to delete it.

You need to recover the VHD file from your C: drive since it's corrupted. You can try using a recovery tool or restore it from a backup if available. Since it's marked as system-used, you might need administrative privileges and possibly a system restore point.

Create a live USB from GParted and rebuild the partitions there.

You can remove the VHD file manually. It may be using the system even without any data because it’s still referenced. Delete the file and try again.

It doesn't generate a new partition. The installation tool lets you modify existing partitions without the device being in use, which prevents the "system is being used" warning.

can I access files while I'm there as that is what it is? Also, will i lose any files accidentally if i do this (such as an automatic format of disk)
