Remote access tool for mobile devices.
I have an app that lets me manage devices in my home, and I want it to work on any Android phone. The problem is it needs to connect to the same Wi-Fi network. I’m planning to buy a budget Android phone on eBay, install the app, and use it remotely from anywhere—like university. I’m considering remote desktop tools but want something suitable for Android, not just controlling phones directly. I need software that lets me leave a smartphone at home (connected to Wi-Fi and charging) and control it from anywhere, even if I don’t remember the WAN IP. Anyone have suggestions?
You might test TeamViewer Host, which gives you control over your phone. Another option is to configure a VPN on your router, enabling access to your home network from anywhere. If you're new to this, it functions like connecting your device as a local machine remotely. Your router might already support it; otherwise, you can install a VPN server on a PC or use a device like a Raspberry Pi to avoid constant PC usage. Additionally, instead of memorizing your IP address, consider a free dynamic DNS service such as Duck DNS.
I will examine the TeamViewer host I plan to use and avoid router settings, since I’m a university student who moves frequently each year. I might consider using a VPN on my PC, but I suspect that will still need router adjustments. My goal is to completely skip router configuration because I’m certain my setup and living situation will change annually for at least five years. I could explore using a Raspberry Pi VPN server since I have some units, though I don’t know how to set them up with .NET.
I just set up the TeamViewer host using post 376 here. It’s working nicely. This is great, especially since my phone (a rooted OnePlus) drops in price on eBay for cracked screens. Now I’m thinking about whether to go really cheap with an old Android phone or stick with something similar to my current device.
