Upgrades are typically done every five to six years, and so far I've experienced very few issues. The initial investment isn't critical, but unexpected malfunctions are a major worry. Previously, I relied on Intel HEDT products, but when that stopped, I switched to AMD Ryzen processors and Gigabyte motherboards. So far everything has worked well; however, two units faced problems with USB/LAN ports and needed replacement. I'm planning upgrades for another two machines soon and am considering whether to continue using premium Gigabyte boards or explore alternatives like Asus or ASRock. When reliability matters most, consider purchasing server boards such as those from Supermicro. They’re built to operate continuously for years without interruption. I've been using an Asrock motherboard for nearly three and a half years without major problems. The only changes were updating the UEFI firmware to enable XMP profiles for my RAM. I previously built a PC in 2017 with the same board, which I sold recently. Through the seller I stayed in contact, so I think it's still running on its original motherboard even after a PSU failure. After more than six years of use, it remains in good condition. Affordable MOBOs are acceptable—they usually come with fewer features.
I believe Hardware Unboxed reviewers are helpful since they check VRM temperatures. The lower the heat, the longer the board tends to last. Clearly, another important aspect is the amount of power the CPU draws initially. Also, the airflow inside the case plays a role.
