Hi there, I've been experimenting with overclocking my i7 8700k processor over the past year. As a photographer and someone who mainly uses it for work and gaming, I boosted its speed to 4.8ghz for about six months. The temperatures stayed under control, and Windows didn’t crash. At that speed, everything runs smoother and more responsively than the default settings. When playing games, performance is solid with no issues. During intense photo editing or multitasking, things work well most of the time. However, when I push through long sessions at full intensity, occasional glitches appear—like strange software behavior or Photoshop freezing. I tend to stick with 4.8ghz because it gives me that snappiness and better benchmark scores (Geekbench, Cinebench). Lowering it to 4.7ghz improved system responsiveness in real life, even if my scores dropped a bit. People often focus on benchmarks, but I think real-world performance matters more. What do you think about the importance of benchmark scores versus actual usage? Any insights would be appreciated!

Benchmark results reflect the performance under perfect conditions. Theoretical gains could reach 4.5 or 4.6 on my 3800x, but I’m content with 4.4 at 1.375. Consistent and reliable across all tasks—no problems encountered. Just focus on stability and what works for you.

I rely on my 8700K strictly for F@H and benchmarking tasks. When it's not running benchmarks, it folds away. For me, benchmark results are important because I compete and share scores regularly. Stability matters most when people use it daily on a work rig—especially if you don’t have extra gear to test performance under stress. Random number chasing is essentially what benchmarking becomes. It can be engaging.

Example: 3DMark03 HD 6950 – 9th place out of 150 entries.

The change is just about 2%. It's unlikely anyone, including me, would notice it in a blind test. I wouldn't be too concerned.
