I purchased an ASRock Rack X299 WS/IPMI ATX Server Motherboard with an R4 socket (LGA 2066) and Intel X299 IPMI dual LAN. I installed my M.2 drive, i7-7820X CPU, and connected SATA cables to the hard drives. There are a couple of L-shaped SATA cables that don’t fit into the main SATA bank, but one is red. I consulted the manual and found out the red socket is a DOM connection. The instructions warned me to check the documentation for Pin 7 power requirements. If the SATA DOM needs 5V, move the jumper caps on the Power Jumper (SATAPWR1) from pins 2-3 to 1-2. If not, leave them as is. Using the wrong jumper could damage the board or the SATA device. I’m unsure whether a standard hard drive needs extra voltage and if it’s safe to use a regular SATA cable in a DOM slot. Thank you for your help!
Without a real SATA DOM connection, treat extra SATA ports as regular ones on the motherboard. There are two main kinds of SATA DOM ports I know of—some have power pins built right into the connector while others need connecting wires to a nearby connector. In both cases, SATA cables don’t have those extra pins, so no problem. If you only need power from the PSU, the red SATA ports work fine. Just remember for SSDs use only SATA III (SATA3) or SAS II (SAS2) to get full speed.
