Looking for a motherboard compatible with your i5-9400F. The ASUS PRIME B360M-A might fit, but it's uncertain if it supports Intel's 9th generation or Coffee Lake processors.

May need a BIOS upgrade, but it is possible. Do you already have this CPU?

B365 motherboards ensure compatibility with 9th generation processors. A budget option would work well.

I haven’t got it yet, but I’m aiming for a range around 170-220. I don’t want to overclock and I don’t need integrated graphics. What do you think about the BIOS update? I’m new to it and a bit nervous about changing it.

Are you already using this motherboard? A BIOS update involves installing fresh firmware. Make sure the device stays powered throughout the process, or you risk damaging it if power is lost during the update. If you haven’t purchased any of these components yet, consider checking out a 3600 and a more affordable B450 board.

You can modify the BIOS without owning the PC. Check if your laptop supports BIOS updates through its settings or manufacturer tools. You may need to download firmware from the manufacturer’s website and install it via USB or another method. It usually doesn’t require a new CPU or RAM, just the appropriate update file.

So I’d definitely consider the Ryzen option instead. The 9400f isn’t compatible with AMD’s latest products. To get it running, you’d likely need an older chip first, then use a USB drive with the update files. Yes, a complete system is required for the installation.

There isn’t a universal tool that covers both i5 and Ryzen processors across all motherboards without BIOS updates. You may need to verify compatibility on the manufacturer’s website or through a dedicated compatibility checker that supports your specific CPU and board models. If unsure, reaching out directly for tailored advice is a good option.

pcpartpicker.com Many motherboards designed for several CPU generations face this issue. Some are confirmed to function because updates are already applied (like MSI MAX boards for Ryzen chips) or because they support the latest chipset.
