I attempted that but the issue persists. It seems the shortcut icon isn't functioning as expected, possibly because it's not the desktop icon.

You adjusted your PC settings twice for that? Are you using an HDD or SSD? I’m curious about the program location. How much quicker would it be without antivirus? The desktop isn’t refreshing at 60 times per second. I tried saving something to the desktop using Explorer instead of dragging files, and it took a while for the file to show up. Clearing the icon cache might even slow things down. In my opinion, it’s not worth diving into a complicated investigation.

It's frustrating because it keeps happening. I don't need any antivirus software, so I stick with WD. I already have a few apps saved directly on the desktop next to their shortcuts, but the issue persists.

Slow performance, minimal icons. Each icon is read from the file. Even when cached, it will appear instantly, but the system will verify if the icon has changed (which takes time) and then display a tiny extra symbol. These extra marks aren't included in the cached version.

1. All program icons appear from the cache.
2. The first program checks for icon updates.
3. If it's a shortcut, a small extra symbol appears.
4. Continue this process for each program.
Defrag can assist slightly. Possibly.

Both of you overlooked the details—it doesn’t relate to my HDD, as I haven’t encountered this issue before.

It relates to how Windows and related software adapt over time. Performance is increasingly focused on SSDs, with less emphasis on HDDs as technology advances. Alternatively, you might be observing a period when Windows Defender conducts scans, updates are being applied, or programs are installed quietly—effects that are barely noticeable on SSDs but significant on traditional hard drives.
