I started enhancing my setup by switching from the SLI GTX970 to a RTX3080 and installing a 1000W modular power supply. After this upgrade, I noticed my CPU is still the main limiting factor (around 50% bottleneck with a 1080 monitor). I’m aiming to boost performance without overspending—either investing heavily in a 4K display for higher resolution or opting for a more affordable 5K option to cut the overall bottleneck. I’d rather support my CPU first, as I’ve already spent enough on gear to make my wife wonder about my decisions. I’m considering RAM upgrades and using OC tools from MSI instead of buying a much pricier monitor. Need recommendations for a suitable RAM package or suggestions to ease the bottleneck? Your advice would be invaluable!
There’s limited clarity on the calculations behind the bottleneck estimations. If performance suffers due to weak parts, consider these upgrades: For a 3080 – a 12700K (~$275) paired with a z690 board (~$200); 3200 MT/s RAM (2x8, $75); for 4K at 120Hz (~$600–800) and a suitable panel.
Thanks for the feedback. I haven’t seen any problems with the game itself, just focusing on getting the most out of my 3080 by addressing the processor bottleneck. I’m wondering if increasing the RAM from 2800Mhz to 3200Mhz would make a difference when I optimize my i7-6700K.
Uncertain about the data source, but a 6700K doesn’t reach 50% on a 3080 at 1080p. Have you checked your GPU usage during games? Also, you’d still face bottlenecks in 4K with that upgraded i7 2600K or i3 10400. The only viable option right now is selling the GPU for a 3060 8GB since further upgrades aren’t possible.
Opt for liquid metal or a direct die if you switch to another AIO and skip air cooling. Target a clock speed of 4.8+. The i7’s DRD4 is outdated—verify the burner specs; in worst cases it’s around 4Gbps I/O, meaning quad rank performance and likely RAM bottlenecks. If it’s dual-rank with decent I/O (not subpar Hynix), a higher VCCSA/IO voltage might be worth considering for better stability above 3600 MHz.
I didn't realize you hadn't tested anything yet... I just watched some benchmarks on YT and I didn't see the 3080 bottlenecked by a 6700k at 1080p. Some games had high CPU usage, like 1:1 ratio of CPU to GPU usage, but others had lower ratios. I mean it was a 10 minute video with 7 modern-ish games, but my short conclusion is the 6700k doesn't bottleneck a 3080, and if it does, it's nowhere near 50%.... maaaaybe up to 10% with very select games. I actually think you have a super sweet setup to run ultra settings and not sweat for about 18 more months. Install your games and play them. You have a very sweet gaming rig.

I plan to check the temperatures under maximum load to see if the H55 needs improvement. Also, I'm curious if the MSI OC Genie also adjusts RAM settings (sorry for the confusion).
H55 won't suffice without direct cooling. Consider purchasing a 40$ dual tower unit such as the Peerless Assassin 120. It will handle the heat better and prevent overheating. The CPU will operate at higher voltages than necessary, so aim for around 1.45v safe for 14nm or newer processes. Vcore, Vccsa, and Vccio should be adjusted accordingly.
