Reflections on Windows 10 and gaming
It's essentially Debian enhanced with a big interface. There was a recent announcement about Bioshock Infinite's Linux version. Steam is promoting it, and it's moving closer. It's still not fully developed, but Linux gaming has become more realistic than before.
I’m not completely confident, but it seems like a good idea. You might just opt for standard Debian instead. Steam is officially backing Ubuntu, even though it isn’t the foundation of SteamOS. I’m really looking forward to where we’re going. It’s almost as if people hear “Linux” and turn away. Please read at least one full sentence before you respond about things jfc.
I believe DX12 will be available with it. I’m curious about the shipping timeline for DX12-based titles—it’s designed to transform PCs in the living room into pseudo-consoles. This setup ensures an immersive experience for gaming and streaming right out of the box. It isn’t intended as a fully functional desktop operating system, nor does it aim to replace Windows. Beneath it runs Debian Linux, allowing you to exit Steam, switch to the desktop, and personalize it with extra packages—though it requires some effort. If you’re seeking a top-notch Linux desktop, consider using a well-known distro; SteamOS games work seamlessly on those platforms.
It might relate to DX12. It’s unlikely they’ll release something until fall 2015. Perhaps it’s an xbone exclusive moving to PC because they haven’t released many titles and sales are weak. Honestly, there doesn’t seem to be much unique value for most players. It could be a Windows Live application that functions like a store—you can purchase xbone games on your PC via your Xbox Live account. M$ might find it interesting despite its limited appeal. From what I see, the Driectx team seems to encourage people to switch from PC gaming to console play, so I don’t expect much special here.
The latest technical preview for Windows 10 lacks the mentioned capabilities. Updates about its features will be released in January.
Most likely includes a hidden charge. Adoption will slow down and DX 12 could become obsolete, similar to DX 11.2 because of Microsoft's interests and tying it to Windows 10. This also hinders the use of low-level APIs on PCs, maintaining their console value. Its worth would be completely lost if we relied on a basic API for PCs. A 6300 FX and a r9 280 would render these consoles obsolete in games like AC Unity. Microsoft's ambition might end their API dominance. Regarding why PC Gamer considers themselves essential to success, it's because operating system sales generate revenue. The Xbox division often incurs losses. Smart PC gamers now understand: we don't need Direct X. Mantle is going public and a new OpenGL version is being developed. Microsoft might pay third-party developers to keep games off Windows/PC and instead focus on Forza. Purchasing an Xbox or continuing to use Microsoft OS keeps this situation intact and undermines our own platform. If you want all these titles except Forza, only one company truly matters—Nvidia. Don't install Windows 10. Game developers build for market share, and every OS can adopt the new OpenGL; Windows 7 supports Mantle, and Mantle is going public so Nvidia can utilize it. Microsoft would likely shut down the Xbox division if the DX monopoly fails to drive OS sales. This is essentially why the X-box division exists. It's simply because OEMs adjust prices based on whether a vendor offers a Linux distribution. This is just typical anti-competitive behavior by Microsoft. They are also being sued for tax evasion in China...
