I built my first PC with Windows 11 on a 1TB M.2 drive. I’m wondering if I can partition the drive so that the boot drive has around 250GB space. The other 2TB drive is for games, but I’m concerned that putting games on the 1TB drive might slow things down since they’re on the same partition. I want to keep the 1TB drive organized before adding too many files or apps on Windows. It seems like the 1TB could end up with only a few gigabytes left for other stuff, which might not be ideal.

Windows won<|pad|> can install games on the same drives unless your system is extremely slow. In real life, the delay difference is rarely noticeable. I don’t understand why you’d need an extra partition on your 1TB M.2. Unless you’re switching operating systems, I’d stick with Windows at 1TB. 250GB is a modest size for Windows 11. If you’re concerned about clutter, you can move programs to another drive—this is often an option in the Install Wizard and also works for Windows Store Apps. If you forgot anything important, feel free to let me know.

That was solid guidance back then when only mechanical hard drives existed. Today’s SSDs move data at a much higher speed and eliminate seek time, so you won’t even notice the improvement if your games are stored on the same drive as Windows.

Thanks for the responses. I was thinking about splitting the boot drive and keeping the Windows partition around 200-300GB. It could make backing up that section simpler instead of trying to locate specific files in a messy drive filled with Windows, games, and other data.
