Reducing my CPU performance
Reducing my CPU performance
Hello, I recently purchased a new CPU to try it out in a build, but it didn’t meet my expectations. My current setup includes an MSI Z490-APro with an Intel Core i3 10105f (budget build), 32 GB of Corsair Vengeance PRO 3600, and an Nvidia Quadro M5000. I tested the Intel Core i7 11700K for a couple of days, but it didn’t provide any noticeable performance gains. After reinstalling the i3 10105f, my PC won’t boot at all—it only starts fans and shows temperature readings from the AIO, but nothing else appears. The DRAM indicator on the board is also lit. I removed the CMOS battery briefly when the PC was unplugged, and it still doesn’t power on. I’m stuck without other components to test, so I’m seeking some guidance. Thanks!
Replace the CPU and verify there are no bent pins on the motherboard. Try one stick of RAM in each slot, confirming it fits completely and all power connectors are secure. Also, observe if the CPU heats up when you power on the PC.
I don’t understand anything clearly. I’ll check when I get home. Should I try removing the cooler to see if it warms up? Also, my motherboard doesn’t appear to have bent pins—please share a photo soon so I can transfer it to my laptop. I’ve re-seated my CPU about eight times, so it seems unrelated to a setting issue. What should I do about leaving the CMOS battery unused for a long time? Update: no photos on my phone. Edited March 13, 2024 by Lord Draconical
Consider adjusting the title since this relates to a troubleshooting scenario. What actions did you perform precisely during the upgrade? You should have interacted with every stage involved in reinstalling the i3, especially if you went beyond simply removing and replacing the CPU. If you need to revert all the way back to the original setup, do it thoroughly to ensure no missed step is overlooked.
I was thinking about restoring my machine by reassembling everything. It could work or it might not. We'll find out in a few hours.
You likely updated the BIOS to enable the 11th Gen CPU on your Z490 board. Verify on the MSi site that adding 11th Gen support doesn't eliminate compatibility with the older 10th Gen chips. Some AMD BIOS versions may sacrifice older chip support for newer ones. You could try restoring the original BIOS settings before swapping the CPU.
