Reduced frame rate on inactive Windows 11 systems
Hello everyone, I hope you're all doing fine today. I just switched to Windows 11 about a month ago and so far everything is working well. But I'm using two monitors with new hardware—usually I play games on one while watching YouTube videos on the other. When something isn't the active window, my frame rate drops significantly, making it hard to watch certain shows. I didn’t have this issue on Windows 10. I use Opera and Chrome as browsers. If anyone has a fix or knows about a similar problem, please share! My system is a Ryzen 7 5800x with 16 GB RAM and an RTX 3070 graphics card.
Occasionally I encounter this problem while using Windows 10. It might be linked to a driver or the browser, and yes, hardware acceleration is enabled.
I don’t have a dual monitor configuration to test or provide a fix. However, here are some options you can try: Turn off GPU Hardware Scheduling so Windows manages process priority (Settings > System > Display > Graphics). You might also activate Optimization for windowed games at the same settings. Apply a frame limiter in your game if it runs smoothly and matches your monitor’s refresh rate—adjust to match your display speed, which helps free up GPU resources for smoother video playback.
