It requires only two lines in the firewall setup, as long as it uses its own dedicated port or IP address not shared with other services. Network-wise, this is feasible with OpenWRT, DD-WRT, or FreshTomato routers.

You can check if your VPS is idle by monitoring its resource usage and network activity. If it's not being utilized, consider shutting it down or putting it into a low-power state to save resources.

I rely on Linux for all my server requirements, so I’m uncertain about its performance on Windows. My approach is straightforward: set up an openvpn server on the VPS, generate client configurations there, deploy them on the clients—specifically OpenWRT and freshtomato. Identify the IP ranges, domains, or ports your app uses. Configure selective VPN routing for either the app’s ports or its associated domains. I’ve previously used iptables with ddwrt, which suggests this setup should function across any Linux-based system.
