For those aiming to rely mainly on HTPCs, "pleb-friendly" could be the best choice. Still, those who prefer Linux must put in effort to understand specific details about using it.

According to what I understand, all P4 models have hyperthreading, and it's quite slow even on some non-animated pages. C2D performs better, though the huge amount of RAM used is still quite demanding.

Thanks for the responses! I appreciate the feedback. I’m leaning toward Linux and enjoy the challenge of OS installations. For a beginner, which type should I try first? The top result you shared looks promising. Regarding disk wiping tools, I’ve found a few suggestions through my searches—would you like some recommendations?

For a disk wiping tool, I suggest DBAN, also known as Darik's Boot and Nuke.

Using more RAM improves performance on Windows 7, 8, and 10. If you prefer alternatives, Linux options like Ubuntu, Elementary OS, and Linux Mint work well. A functional Hackintosh setup might also be possible.

I'm searching for DDR2 memory, particularly 2GB units, which are currently hard to come by. I'm planning to check Linux Mint before completely clearing the drive. For someone new to Linux, what suggestions do you have?

For someone just starting with Linux, the options I suggested are quite straightforward. Elementary OS feels the most natural because it looks and works a lot like Mac OS or macOS, while Ubuntu is likely the most widely used. Linux Mint is the closest to Windows in terms of appearance and setup, though all three are easy to install with simple steps. You’ll still need to use the Terminal for some apps, especially if you want Steam, but most basic tools like Firefox and office programs come pre-installed on Ubuntu and Elementary OS. If you prefer, you can get apps from the browser in a single file, though you won’t have an installer. Online guides usually explain everything clearly.

Thanks for the guidance. I've been thinking about how to use this PC and believe converting it into a HTPC would be perfect for my home setup. I've purchased a new 128GB SSD for the boot sector and a 2TB HDD for storage—maybe I should also clear out the included 500GB drive. Would a certain distribution make installing media players like VLCPlayer easier? I think the default LibreOffice sounds appealing, especially since my parents will enjoy using their PowerPoints on the TV. EDIT: I also bought a budget Bitfenix case (Nova Black) on sale, while the previous Acer model had its side panel bent possibly due to maintenance. So I’m basically putting everything together into a fresh case. Excited!

VLC setup is likely consistent across major platforms. These distributions—Ubuntu, Elementary OS, and Linux Mint—offer polished interfaces that stand out over less popular options. You should be able to find VLC via the Ubuntu app store, though dedicated installers exist for each distribution.
