I’m planning to expand my home network by adding a few new subnets and buying an 8-16 port L2 device. I’m seeking advice from people who’ve used managed switches they liked, as well as any warnings about issues they encountered. Since my background is with bigger 24-48 port units in industrial settings, your thoughts on what’s practical for HomeLab would be valuable.

I purchased the device at a low price. It's a basic management switch available on Amazon for £35.

I've used UniFi switches in my lab, running four of them. A controller is necessary for management, but a HomeLab with a hypervisor lets you self-host it. The interface is user-friendly and offers plenty of customization options. I do have some complaints about the absence of an embedded web interface, though you could consider the EdgeSwitch line from Ubiquiti if needed.
