Recommendations for suitable full system drive backup software.
Macrium Reflect is an alternative; free options are preferred, with open source being the best choice?
I intend to purchase a Solidigm 1tb nvme drive (still using PCIe 3) as my primary system drive, while moving the 1tb WD black hdd to a backup disk.
Although I have two hot-swap drive bays for large data drives with a cold storage HDD plan, I haven’t established a robust system drive backup strategy yet.
I’ve explored forums and search results for free open source backup solutions, but they lack the usability needed for straightforward local backups/restores (CLI, community support, reliability issues). For paid applications offering free versions, Macrium Reflect has frequently been suggested, though its subscription model and end-of-free period deter some users.
AOMEI Backupper comes in second place, providing at least a one-time license for paid plans with a free version.
Since my desktop is currently non-functional due to a PSU RMA, it’s challenging to test the software, so I’m seeking advice here.
Key features I need:
- Full drive backup (not limited to OS)
- Incremental backups with fine-grained versioning for specific folders or files
- Graphical user interface
For those suggesting sync-with versioning tools, I’m thinking about applying them to my data drives instead of the current manual copying method (which makes little difference).

Not focusing on the features you referenced, but AOMEI Backupper Pro appears to show up often at no cost on the MalwareTips site. Try searching for "Aomei Backupper Pro 1yr for free."
