He should consider titles that push visual boundaries without demanding top-tier performance. Look for games with impressive graphics that showcase creativity and artistry, even if they're not the latest AAA releases. Indie gems or side-scrolling experiences often deliver striking visuals while staying accessible on a mid-range system.
Ryse praises the look of Son of Rome as stunning and impressive.
Witcher 3 is still on my list, though I haven't played it yet. I also think Tomb Raider (2013) is really great. It has a nice look. Recently I finished the game at 100% on Hard difficulty for ARMA 3. If you're looking to challenge someone's patience, tactics, and strategy, this one is tough—especially on mid-range systems with high graphics settings and AA enabled. It's a military simulation shooter.
Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag seems to offer superior visual quality compared to Unity and Syndicate. I'm curious if your friend's computer can handle it. Enabling super-sampling on Rise of Rome made my R9 280x feel like a slow-motion video. Crysis 3 was a solid pick, perhaps ArmA 3 could work too. Star Citizen might be an option if their machine has enough VRAM—up to 6 GB would be ideal.
Other games include Witcher 3, Star Citizen, Assassin's Creed Syndicate, Mass Effect with mods, and Sins of a Solar Empire Rebellion. Skyrim also offers extensive customization. Star Wars Battlefront EA is another option. Despite average gameplay, visuals and audio stand out. Texture mods and sweetfx can enhance the experience.
