Currently exploring:
Neverwinter
Rift
Also tried in WoW Classic (retail if that qualifies), though that isn't free-to-play... anyway.
Looking for some choices for action combat, since Rift isn't great and I don't want it to feel like a copy of so many games, even ones similar to itself. Still, I'm open to unique options.
Tips, tricks and the like are welcome. Hope I can assist too.

Path of Exile offers a Diablo-inspired experience. Phantasy Star Online 2 was a short session, not enough to form a strong opinion. A friend who played the original became very invested. Star Trek Online provides a large amount of grinding, but it can be enjoyable on the first mission and when acquiring new ships. If you enjoy Star Trek-style ship battles, it might suit you. Ground combat is essentially a reworked Neverwinter, also involving a lot of grind. Eve Online has a steep learning curve, is grind-heavy, and many features are pay-to-play. That said, if you like PvP, backstabbing, or enjoy crafting and market manipulation, it can be entertaining. I played for...

Hi
minnin90
👍
I can suggest one great MMO: Guild Wars 2.
It's free to play for the main game and the expansions are affordable.
Another expansion is planned and will be available soon.
The graphics are excellent and the community is strong.

Great, I played the first one a long time ago! Haha! Is it still worth it? I’m sure it’s not free right away—have to buy it first... just curious... I just saw a video about it and it looks pretty solid for around 20 years or so.
Let me know!
OH! And I plan to try GW2 soon... my internet is slow and it’s getting a bit big...

I'd add a mention of Final Fantasy XIV. The free trial allows you to play the core game and the initial expansion. There are certain limitations, though they aren't essential for having fun.

Path of Exile offers a Diablo-inspired experience if you're seeking a similar clone.
Phantasy Star Online 2? I tried it a couple of months ago and played around for about half an hour, not enough to form a strong impression. A friend who played the original game became really hooked and suggested I give it a shot.
Star Trek Online is quite a lengthy grind, but it can be enjoyable when you tackle missions for the first time and acquire new ships. If you're a fan of Star Trek's ship combat style, it might appeal to you. The ground combat feels like a reworked Neverwinter, which is also considered a grindy experience.
Eve Online is tough to get into, with a steep learning curve and a lot of grinding involved. Still, if you enjoy PvP and are willing to engage in backstabbing or have an interest in crafting and market manipulation, it can be entertaining. I spent many years playing in role-playing guilds, and once you set clear ideological goals, it becomes more engaging. It also provides a substantial PvE path, though it tends to be repetitive (similar to STO, but interesting initially). A major drawback is the presence of long-time players who have all the skills and resources, making them nearly unbeatable. However, you can still enjoy the early stages in free mode, which depends a lot on your dedication as a gamer.
