Moster Hunter and the sea of thieves are decent, though not the latest
Choose one of these options and stick with it for a few hours.
Monster Hunter World
Far Cry New Dawn
Far Cry 5
Insurgency Sandstorm
Ghost Recon Wildlands – essentially The Division meets South America, with first or third person shooting available. Very engaging.
Rising Storm 2 Vietnam
Back in the PC gaming world, there are actually many more excellent free-to-play titles available these days. You might not need to spend any money at all—just a few dollars if you prefer. Destiny 2 is now offered for free on Steam, though the full content requires purchasing DLC.

If you enjoyed Destiny, I also suggest giving Warframe a try:

CS:GO is currently free-to-play:

Beyond Steam, you should also look at the Steam free-to-play section:

And keep an eye on upcoming Steam sales, which could be a good time to snag deals on any game.
Epic Games Store offers a weekly free game, though the multiplayer options are still limited.

Xbox Game Pass for PC provides impressive value: for just $3.99 per month, you gain access to over 100 titles, including Gears 5, Sea of Thieves, Forza, Metro Exodus and DiRT Rally 2.
I agree with this, make sure to check the reviews and comments before installing games, as that's where you'll discover what you're getting yourself into.
I wouldn't rely on it. The past two years of major Steam sales have been full of steep drops compared to previous years. The prices have been quite unfair to gamers. And seeing old games sold at the same prices they've always had is really disrespectful to our intelligence.
The best times to get games are usually unpredictable and not tied to big sales events.
If you have fond memories of Battlefield 2 and possibly experimented with the Project Reality mod, I can confidently recommend Squad. Just watch some videos to gauge your interest—it's still active, enjoyable when you form a strong and well-organized team, and features large maps. It's not as intense as Arma, but not as relaxed as today's Battlefield titles. There are no in-game purchases or microtransactions; you simply buy the game and the developers continuously add new maps and factions without cost.
There is also Rainbow Six Siege, though it might be too competitive for your taste.
While you are right that there might be better discounts, there's still a huge stack of games on Steam sale cheaper than right now.
So sure, you could wait for a better deal, but that means you are not playing, and especially on multiplayer games it's important to buy them before player base dies down.
Battlefield 5 offers a lot of enjoyment with its recent Metro map addition, reminiscent of earlier versions. The intense close-quarters action is a highlight. Opinions vary—some call it trash or not as great as before—but I personally enjoy it. The developers have significantly enhanced the game since launch, and it even includes a battle royale mode for those who like that. It's a visually impressive title with many quality improvements over past versions.
Star Wars Battlefront II stirred up a lot of debate over microtransactions. Those annoying in-game purchases are gone, and the updates have been free to receive. Since its release, they've added major characters like Tarkin, Anakin, Obi-Wan, Captain Phasma, plus droidekas and other units. It's been a great experience for quite some time.
If you're looking for something fresh, Borderlands 3 is worth checking out. It's really enjoyable and well-polished.
It seems like you're currently considering a purchase, but not always consistently. There are times when you spot good offers, though they often turn out to be recurring deals. The benefit here is being able to secure repeat purchases for $0.49 to $0.99 each time. I recently bought Half Life 2 on July 3rd and saved money by grabbing Episode One during the sale. I've spent several hours playing it since then.
If you haven't already, Estranged Acts I & II are available for free on Steam for a while now. They're just as good as Half Life 2 and look great in 1440p. It's enjoyable to replay them to collect achievements, and they've been updated with more content recently.
I'm not sure what you're asking about exactly. I know some games stop working, but that doesn't mean others can be played. Also, it doesn't matter if a game is dead or not—other titles are still available. Some games that seem to stop can still be enjoyed using bots. I'll mention a few examples so you can check them out if you haven't already. One of these should be around $0.49 to $0.99 during Steam sales.
Call of Duty Ghosts features bot play that closely mirrors online multiplayer. I got it for $2.99 last year and found it worth the investment for bot sessions and Extinction.
Call of Duty WWII also offers similar bot play, though it's harder to find at a low price.
Monday Night Combat is the kind of game I'm talking about—something that should return around $0.49 again soon. Bot play here is fun, and it's interesting how many developers focus on that aspect.
Totally agree. Obtainable for just $4.49 all the time on Origin too. You can get excellent fps using custom graphic settings in it as well and you lose absolutely no visual fidelity whatsoever. One of the few games that looks insanely similar to all ultra using custom settings. They've did an excellent job optimizing this game.
