Recognizing Failure Anxiety & How to Avoid It
I purchased several new parts including a 3950x, Gigabyte X570 Master, Corsair HX750i, 32GB RAM, and two Seagate M.2 drives. After upgrading, the system ran well for nine days until the memory failed. It was sent back for testing, and they confirmed the memory was dead. After a 16-day wait, the same issue occurred again. The motherboard stopped working after replacing the PSU, which had been previously tested and found faulty. I replaced it with an ASUS ROG Crosshair VIII Hero and upgraded the PSU to an HX850i. In my mind, the motherboard failed because of a bad PSU, and both boards were swapped. The CPU, RAM, and M.2 drives remained intact. There are no thermal problems, and the system isn’t overclocked (except for XMP at 3200MHz). The first failure happened without an UPS, the second with one. It only connected to my AV receiver via TOS-Link using an Anker USB hub. I’m worried about a bad PSU causing multiple failures—could there be another factor? I’ve never heard of a component failing memory completely while others stayed functional. My CPU and RAM are fine, and the graphics card has always worked. Is there anything else I should test or monitor to prevent future issues? I’m starting to feel really anxious about rebuilding this again. Cheers.
The connections are all secure and the case grommets are properly positioned, preventing any PSU cables from rubbing against edges or corners. The UPS connects to a mains socket, which I’ve verified works well. In the UK, everything is individually earthed, and the UPS is plugged into that socket. My router, NAS, a small Netgear switch, and a single monitor all connected to the UPS without any issues during the test. I’ve built several systems before, used three Aorus mini-ITX boards for PCs in the past, and they all functioned correctly. This failure was unexpected and especially concerning since it happened twice, which made me worry more than usual given my own investment.
It seems the previous power supply was defective, causing failures in the initial units. Switching to the new one should resolve the issue.
