Recently enhanced system experiences stuttering in secondary windows only during GPU-heavy applications.
I completed a fresh upgrade over the weekend and encountered an odd problem. Certain apps on the secondary and third HDMI-connected displays are stuttering during video playback (audio remains unaffected), while the fourth monitor using DVI behaves normally if a game or GPU-heavy program is focused on the main screen. This wasn’t an issue with my previous setup, which was less powerful. The DVI connection seems more stable, though it fails in SoT but works for FFXIV. Titles like Sea of Thieves and FFXIV exhibit this behavior, though not every game does. Switching to another application window resolves the glitches and prevents frame drops, but when I switch back to the active game, it restarts. This leads me to suspect the system is throttling resources or prioritizing the running program. Even recording with OBS shows choppiness when the game window is open, yet stabilizes when I close it and switch windows. My rig now includes a Ryzen 5 3600 (no overclocking) paired with an Asus ROG 450-F Gaming motherboard (BIOS v3103), Corsair Vengeance LPX 32GB (2x16GB, 3200MHz DDR4), and a 144Hz Radeon FX580. I’ve kept the EVGA 700 B PSU Primary Monitor connected via DisplayPort, with secondary and third at 60Hz on HDMI, and the fourth at 60Hz on DVI. I recently upgraded from a Ryzen 5 1600 (OC’d to 3.4GHz) and a GA-AB350-Gaming stick with 16GB RAM at 2400MHz. I’ve updated GPU drivers and BIOS, but ASUS’s update process is slow—sometimes the drivers won’t load properly. I also disabled Radeon Anti-Lag in Radeon Settings, turned off V-Sync, and adjusted display settings. The framerate stays steady when switching monitors, but when I enable game mode it drops again. Hardware acceleration is off in Firefox and Discord, though it doesn’t help. I’ve also turned off transparency in Windows, changed monitor connections, and even rolled back to Windows 10 version 2004. Game mode was never used. Hardware acceleration is disabled in browsers and chat apps, but it doesn’t resolve the issue. It seems my new CPU might be causing the GPU to become the bottleneck instead of the other way around.
Which port and cable are you employing? I'm experiencing an issue with my games on my 1060 3GB card.
I've experimented with a mix. Most ports are active—2 DP, 2 HDMI, 1 DVI. I've removed some, restarted, and even tried live removal. The only consistent improvement comes when unplugging and replugging the HDMI. It seems to help occasionally, but the effect is unpredictable. I'm unsure if the memory issue is involved or if the GPU might be damaged.
I adjusted the game settings to cap performance around 60fps, but it appears that issue. With a 144hz monitor, some titles still run smoothly at higher frames, though 144fps isn’t ideal for stability. I’m questioning whether the RX580 is no longer suitable for a 3600Hz setup or if there’s something wrong with my configuration.
