Using the EVO should yield around 3200 ish per unit, double the 6k+ I’m seeing. I’ve got two 961 drives in a software RAID 0 setup, but I’m only getting about 6.5GB.

You're not reaching the desired performance. It might be necessary to use PCI-E cards to access the PCI lanes. I suspect you're only getting around 3kbps on the connection.

They used PCI-e cards for this setup. If I follow this path, I’ll opt for the Asus Apex with a DIMM slot that has VROC and another slot for PCI-e lanes. I’m hoping the chipset won’t limit me to outdated options like the z270 boards and I won’t even use RAID. Some newer boards include a PCI-e card that supports 2 to 4 M.2 drives via the PCI-e interface—just insert it into an x16 slot.
