I'm setting up a new PC for the first time. I've been using PC Part Picker to compare prices and verify compatibility, but after selecting my components, I encountered a compatibility warning. Scrolling further revealed a message about some AMD B450 chipset boards needing a BIOS update before using Matisse CPUs. Updating the BIOS might require a different CPU that isn't supported by older versions. Since I'm not very tech-savvy (14 years old) and my dad isn't either, I just wanted to understand how serious this issue is. Should I avoid buying everything together? Do I need to update the BIOS, and if so, how should I do it? Thanks.
Certainly, the 400 series chipsets were designed specifically for Ryzen 2000 series processors. Occasionally, a B450 motherboard comes with a BIOS version that predates the launch of the Ryzen 3000 processor. During the pre-release phase, a BIOS update was released to support "Matisse" chips. To avoid issues, it's best to confirm with the seller you plan to buy that the board includes a BIOS compatible with Ryzen 3000 CPUs. Alternatively, opt for a chipset intended for Ryzen 3000, such as the X570, or purchase a Ryzen 2000 series chip paired with the B450 X470 chipset.
On the back of the Mortar you’ll notice a button. This is the one for upgrading the BIOS without using a CPU. The motherboard requires connected RAM and power supply. Prepare a USB with Fat32 format, install the latest BIOS files onto it. Insert the USB into the slot adjacent to the button. Activate the button and observe the indicators until the process finishes
I need to be cautious about recommending a B450 board while the Ryzen 4000 desktop is nearby. Are all or none of these boards compatible? Could a B450 with a Ryzen 3000 series work well right now? Why isn’t it simpler to match the CPU with its intended chipset? And how many attempts does it take to find the center of a Tootsie Pop? Someone might not even remember...
