Hi there, I got an early 2015 MacBook Pro recently from my uncle who mentioned his internet banking site wasn’t working. I verified it isn’t functioning as expected. According to the label, I should use the latest Safari, Chrome, or Firefox. After trying to install Chrome and Firefox, both reported needing MacOS X 10.11, which this model doesn’t support. The system info shows only MacOS 10.10.5, and the update page says it’s all outdated. I’m wondering if the machine is too old to be useful anymore—maybe he should switch to a phone for banking—or if there’s a way around the version requirements.

In early 2015 the system ought to support updates up to Monterey, allowing users to download the latest version from the App Store.

You might need to set up a full backup before trying a newer Mac OS version on that device. It’s best to back up your time machine data and bring the system to a trusted Apple support expert. They can install either High Sierra 10.12.6 or Catalina 10.14.x, avoiding Catalina Mojave if possible. After installation, restore from Time Machine to recover files and settings, though some apps may not work. It’s safer to stick with a slightly updated OS for compatibility with existing programs. Installing the latest version can be complicated because of UI and setting changes, which might affect performance. If you’re unsure, a local Mac expert can help resolve the issue. Let me know if you want more details.

It seems like you're confirming the same idea again, but highlighting what appears in the app store when checking for updates.

This version isn't compatible with the current internet banking system due to additional requirements for modern encryption protocols. Following the instructions on the site reveals the issue.

Thank you for your input. We've scheduled a meeting with our local software expert who is certified in Apple products, and we've prepared a complete backup of all device data. I didn't mention this before, as I'm not very comfortable with MacOS. This appears to be a significant concern for me, especially since I'm considering the 2020 M1 Macbook Air while already using an iPhone and benefiting from continuity features. Due to this situation, even though it wasn't my own laptop, I've decided to stick with my Windows machine despite having an iPhone.
