It remains a solid choice with a direct COM port on the I/O and the flexibility to add more components later. It also features a moisture-proof coating and has been validated for industrial use.
Serial connections function properly when drivers are accurate. You can verify this by disconnecting pins 2 and 3 on the COM port with a jumper and testing with a terminal if the peripheral displays and echoes your data. If it does, there may be an issue with your application. I often use FTDI serial to USB adapters, which appear as serial interfaces. On Linux they show up as ttyS0, and on Windows as a standard serial port. Besides ensuring the right driver is installed, be aware of potential problems with Windows driver signatures. Check the chip's code and install the appropriate driver to simplify your selection.
