Recent motherboard featuring serial port functionality
Hello, everyone. With the recent changes in astronomical energy costs, I’ve chosen to upgrade our old core 2 duo machine. Previously, it added 50 euros to our total bill of 500, making it 140 euros. The main issue now is finding a modern replacement motherboard with a serial port for a vital component. We’ve tried converting serial to USB, but those adapters haven’t worked. I’m hoping someone can assist us with this matter. Thank you!
Many motherboards include a COM header that can be connected to a slot cover using a cable. Verify the manual first to confirm its presence. This appears to be the initial issue to address. Use a genuine non-clone FDTI chip adapter for best results. Identify any issues when earlier adapters fail. What baud rate does this device operate at? (Perhaps you already know what it is.)
We attempted this a few years back for roughly a week; it would link but would disconnect instantly or, when stable, would display 'jibrish.' It's a POS terminal, and we're required to use that specific model for security reasons—any other option isn't supported by the system.
The ProBook 650 G1 through G5 models came with a serial port, though if you're checking a used unit you must confirm it includes one. The ProBook 650 series is known for its durability and minimal failure rate. I swapped out my G1 two weeks ago; it’s nearly seven years old. The main reason was that the built-in WWAN card only supported 3G, and Norway has shut down those towers. A better choice would be to look for a genuine POS PC—even a new one will have a serial port.
Additionally, I owned a 650G1 as a business computer for more than five years and it functioned properly until the end. When I attempted to sell it through IT, they refused to return it outside their guidelines.
Honestly, I’d have liked a NUC setup, but if I can locate one, a laptop would make a great substitute. Thanks everyone!
