8700k, 1080ti, 16gb ram, triple monitor... one main and two 1440x900 at 75hz portrait side by side. Transitioned from LG 1080p 75hz 8bit ultra wide to my MSI 1440p 155hz 10bit ultra wide, both using the same unknown quality DP cable. Now half my games are failing in different ways. Screens disconnect, HDR toggles randomly. Direct X breaks and other "games failed" alerts appear at startup with a "trying it again" prompt, which sometimes restarts the game. Random crashes to desktop occur without any error messages when the game runs. I've tried disabling Windows screen optimizations for each game and turning off Windows 10 HDR, which helped a few. However, these fixes didn't resolve all issues or work for every game. My thoughts: 1. Do we need a better DP cable? 2. Is my GPU finally failing or overwhelmed? 3. Are my side monitors actually assisting? Help would be appreciated.
attempted driver reinstallation didn't fix the issue; temperatures stayed normal. I tried the display port cable with my new monitor, but no improvement. Earlier, my GTX770 had similar problems—monitor cuts out after about 30 minutes of gaming, worsening with longer sessions. It seemed to be a small chip near the HDMI/DP ports getting very hot. Adding a small fan helped. My side monitors only accept VGA input—one uses an HDMI to VGA adapter, the other a DisplayPort to VGA. Could the power supply chip for these adapters be failing? My GPU is vertical mount with a metal backplate. Is insufficient airflow to the rear of the card causing the problem?
Ugh, the problem was in low light... I took out my two side monitors. The fix was working. It seems the power supply for those adaptors is drawing too much current and getting hot, just like with my old GTX770. I’m probably hunting for new non-VGA side monitors now.
It might occur when just one monitor is connected, possibly stressing the graphics card to handle all three simultaneously. Otherwise, ensure fans are clean and verify all connections carefully.
I faced the same problem when the thermal paste broke on an older graphics card. Disassembling it and using noctua paste resolved the issue.
just checked, everything seems okay with one side connected. both the HDMI and display port adapters functioned properly on their own. i think using two active adapters with one graphics card and a third passive monitor would work well. it seems the extra power draw from my new main monitor caused the PSU chips to overheat, leading to thermal cycling. maybe I should look for side monitors with a display port in the socket instead.
