Recent GPU improvements causing unexpected black displays
I recently attempted a GPU upgrade for my PC and encountered the same problems again. My first upgrade was an RTX 5070 that functioned properly for about a week before showing instability—audio became increasingly distorted, especially during browsing, followed by a black screen. I would force shut down and restart, sometimes getting a boot or VGA LED activation. I assumed the GPU was defective. Now I have an RX 9070 XT, which also causes these issues. After installing fresh drivers, static audio appeared immediately, then a black screen would follow, indicating another problem with my system. I’ve switched to my old RX 6700, which works without issues. My current specs are: Windows 11 Ultimate 64-bit, MSI MPG B550I, GAMING EDGE WIFI, Ryzen 5600X (stock), 2x 16GB G.Skill RAM at 3600MHz XMP, RX 6700 not an XT model with a Gen 4 PCIe riser, Samsung SSD 970 EVO plus a 1TB Corsair SF750 (750W, 80+ Platinum). Any advice or recommendations would be greatly appreciated. I plan to disassemble the system to inspect components, possibly testing without the PCIe riser and checking cables over the weekend when I have more time. Cheers.
Did you remove the outdated drivers via DDU? It might be that multiple drivers are interfering with each other. If not, give it a shot.
Are you confident about that 750w PSU being sufficient? Have you tested your new RX9070XT on a friend's computer? Do you have any PC parts store where you could try an 850w PSU to see if your new GPU runs smoothly with a higher power supply? A 750w might just be the minimum, and your GPU could be struggling with low voltage, possibly causing the black screen. The RX6700 requires at least 550w, so your current PSU could be the issue. For the 9070XT, the recommended PSU is MINIMUUM 750 when paired with a Core i5 Ultra. For the 5080, you should aim for at least 850w, as I found through a quick search.
It's surprising I'm facing this problem alone. The issue seems to affect the RTX 5070 too, despite its higher power rating. I might need to visit a nearby computer shop for help.
Verify the power supply is functioning properly to ensure sufficient energy for operation; otherwise, the issue might stem from a faulty PCIe port rather than the PSU itself. Your existing GPU appears to operate without problems.
The PSU has been around for quite some time. Recent upgrades to the SF750 have improved performance, and newer models manage current cards more effectively. I had to swap out my old Antec EAG650 because it started acting up with higher resolutions—my 6700XT handled it fine, but the Seasonic version struggled. The PSU I own now is built to support modern components.
The PSU refers to the previous version of the sf750 (pre-2024). I recently reinstalled the GPU again. I managed to boot into Windows, but the audio still displayed static. On the performance screen for AMD Adrenaline, it was idling at about 24 watts before the screen went black again.
Riser cables can sometimes cause issues even when functioning correctly. I'm open to testing without them if feasible. Running tests on a clean Windows installation might also be beneficial. DDU isn't a complete solution, so beginning from a blank slate could be advantageous. Best of luck!
