Hello everyone, my name is Luca from Italy. I’m reaching out because I urgently need assistance with a new build. Below is a concise summary of the main issue and a detailed list of all tests I’ve carried out. I apologize in advance for any English issues.
TLDR Issue description: The system freezes between 2 to 5 seconds after Windows starts, occurring about 99% of the time. This only happens when a GPU is installed in the PCIe1 slot. It works perfectly with an external GPU in the PCIe2 slot or if no GPU is present at all. I verified all components except RAM and CPU.
Events & tests performed:
- Assembled PC with these specs:
- CPU: Amd Ryzen 7 7700X 4.5GHz AM5 100-100000591WOF
- Cooler: Arctic Freezer 34 esport duo
- RAM: DIMM DDR5 32GB G.skill Trident Z5 Neo 2*16 CL36 RGB Nero [F5-6000J3636F16GX2-TZ5NR]
- Drive: M.2 SABRENT SSD 500 GB, Rocket SSD NVMe PCIe 4.0 M.2 2280
- PSU: LC-Power LC8850II V2.3 Arkangel
- GPU: nVidia Zotac GEFORCE RTX 4080/16GB/GDDR6
- Enabled EXPO profile in BIOS, installed Windows 10, updated drivers, and monitored temperatures. All functions worked for about 2 hours with stable temperatures.
- After 30 minutes, the system froze 3–4 seconds after PIN entry or desktop load. This happened occasionally except during rare exceptions where it stayed responsive until reboot.
Test results:
1. Disabled EXPO in BIOS – no difference.
2. Installed Windows on a different drive (SATA 500GB Samsung SSD) – booted successfully, drivers updated, same issue after restarts.
3. Ran MEMTEST – no errors.
4. Switched to Windows 11 – same freezing behavior.
5. RAM tested with MEMTEST – full cycle, zero errors.
6. Installed fresh Windows without updates – identical results.
7. Updated BIOS to latest non-beta versions – no changes.
8. Removed Nvidia 4080 from PCIe1, used DisplayPort – system remained stable for hours.
9. Disabled integrated VGA in BIOS – no impact.
10. Replaced old 1050ti in PCIe1 slot – same freezing behavior.
11. Ordered a new MSI MPG A850G (PCIe5) – issue persisted.
12. Contacted ASUS Tech support – they suggested checking the PCIe1 slot and offered refund for a faulty card, but no replacement was provided.
13. Ordered a different MOBO (X670 AORUS ELITE AX) – same freezing after changes.
14. Performed extreme tests: booted with one RAM stick at a time, enabled EXPO, limited VCORE SOC, disabled VGA in BIOS, and more. All returned to normal.
Final thoughts: I haven’t confirmed RAM or CPU yet, but I suspect both might be faulty. My next step is to request an RMA for the CPU and ask for guidance on AMD’s return process. I’m also curious about their support experience and what to expect if the issue persists. Please help me avoid wasting time and money.
Thanks very much!
Luca
Hey! Have you tried solving the problem? I’ve seen the same issue with the same CPU, especially after installing the 4070. It keeps showing errors about the GPU driver not working properly.
