I recently attempted an upgrade and noticed a spark along with an unusual odor when the system powered on. Despite having experience building computers, this is my first encounter with such a situation. I’ve installed Intel Core i7-13700K, ASUS Z790-P Prime WiFi DDR5, and a G.Skill 32GB DDR5-6000 memory kit. It’s paired with a 3070 processor and a 750W EVGA bronze rated power supply. After hearing the spark and smelling something off, I shut down the PSU immediately and inspected for any burnt components on the motherboard. The odor seemed to originate from the power supply unit. Could the PSU have failed or was there an error on my part? One possibility is insufficient power—my check showed around 70W of extra capacity, but I’m unsure if that’s enough for all components. The PSU appears to be several years old. Any advice would be invaluable. Thanks!

Did you connect cables from a different power supply unit? Most PSUs tend to shut down unless voltage is reversed, which could damage them. Were you using any separate stands for your motherboard during installation? Which USB devices were connected? Did you need to force any connections because they felt unusually tight?
