970 is fine, though Star Citizen was running with 3.6GB of VRAM at 1080p resolution.
It's realistic that by the time the PU is ready, we'll have the 1080 or whatever comes next. Don't rely solely on the 980.
I've heard many people mention high VRAM issues, but I haven't experienced it myself. I've reached 4GB and still seen no frame drops.
I've experienced minimal problems with my system exceeding 3584MB, except during peak usage when processing power is limited. Generally, performance seems more tied to the engine than hardware. From what I've gathered, players on PCper mentioned smooth gameplay in BF4, while COD:AW tends to lag noticeably. I've also noticed SLI configurations running FC4 around 3.8GB with no noticeable stutter. Many who report frequent stutters are either maintaining around 20fps (to compensate memory demands), consistently hitting or surpassing 4GB, or experiencing issues even below 3.5GB (likely system-related). It appears paying attention to testing details is key, as real-world issues are less common than perceived. Also, SC doesn't offer many ways to lower memory usage significantly—on my machine, jumping from high to medium settings usually cuts memory consumption by about 100MB or less in the hangar, and users at 1080p seem to use similar memory as those at 1440p. Higher resolutions and details still add to the load.
