I received an unusual query about RAM generations. Yesterday I played Left 4 Dead and noticed my RAM usage was roughly 2-3GB. I was using an AM4 platform with DDR4. Suddenly, I wondered if the RAM consumption for DDR1 and DDR2 back in 2009 remains the same today with DDR4 and DDR5? Are there advantages to newer RAM types like DDR4 or DDR5? Could faster performance or lower memory usage help a modern program? Specifically, would a 16GB DDR1/2/3 setup run as smoothly as DDR4/5 on current games? Assuming the CPU stays consistent across generations, do we just follow industry standards instead of worrying about RAM upgrades? Thanks!

the main distinction lies in how quickly each generation operates, with speeds roughly doubling between DDR3 and DDR4. for instance, running L4D2 with 32gb of RAM means the entire game map is stored in memory, allowing the CPU or GPU to access it rapidly—leading to improved frame rates.

The same information fits into 16 GB of memory regardless of the technology used. Units remain consistent—bytes stay bytes. Latest RAM modules can move data significantly quicker than previous models.

There are many topics you can discuss here, but broadly speaking, 3GB of RAM usage stays consistent across different types. Probably, Left 4 Dead 2 used less memory back in 2009—not because it needed fewer resources, but due to updates that increased its demand. Also, with more RAM available, Windows allows apps to utilize more memory. When RAM is scarce, Windows uses the page file more aggressively. Someone with 4GB of DDR2 would likely not experience 3GB being used by the game, since parts of the game files would reside in the page file. The key difference between generations lies in efficiency, speed, and capacity.

It would perform better with DDR5. It's quite fast.
