Hello everyone, I recently acquired a 3070 from Palit and started assembling a new setup. The issue is that my system randomly restarts, but only the GPU is affected—not the whole PC. Both monitors go black, then a distorted version of my desktop appears briefly (I see the taskbar, but nothing else). This happens even when I’m not under heavy load. During testing, it works fine while playing games or using MSFS and WoT. Temperatures are normal: below 70°C for the GPU and below 60°C for the CPU. It seems to be a widespread problem, though Nvidia hasn’t responded to any forum posts. In my case, it’s not the whole system that restarts; I’m writing this because none of the other threads seem to have a solution. So far, I’ve reinstalled drivers via DDU, reset Windows, swapped cables between PSU and GPU, tried different riser cables—nothing works consistently. Occasionally it occurs twice daily or every couple of weeks, but I can’t pinpoint the cause. This only happens during gameplay. I don’t have a spare PSU or GPU to test alternatives with. I haven’t overclocked any components, and there are no error logs. All drivers are up to date. You’re all my last option since the rest of these discussions don’t offer a fix, and OP replies are stopping. Thanks ahead, Tommi Case.

Sorry, I didn't mention that. I also adjusted the power levels for the GPU and CPU, tested various DP ports on the GPU, changed the HZ and resolution on my monitor. The BIOS PCI settings seem fine. RAM and GPU were reinserted. I'm really confused about what's going on.

Asus just dropped a beta BIOS for my motherboard, and I just updated it. I'll let you know if it affected any errors. Also, after installing it, my idle CPU temperatures are about 10°C higher than before—what does that mean?

Consider an alternative option that works seamlessly with the 3070, like Corsair RMX/I lineup.

It doesn't seem to be the PSU because the PC isn't fully restarting during the issue. The error happens unpredictably and isn't triggered by heavy use or testing. Edited June 12, 2021 by ofenfrisch

Hey there, I see you're dealing with the same RTX 3070 issues too. It’s not uncommon. You’re running a Ryzen 2700x with 16GB RAM, using GSKILL 3200 ASUS crosshair hero viii M.2, Samsung Evo EVO G2 1000W, and an RTX 3070 InnoCold iX X4. Your problems mainly pop up during gaming—black screens crashing and rebooting, with a desktop crash being more frequent.

You’ve already tried a few fixes: reinstalling the Windows 10 DDU driver, updating from Nvidia, downclocking in MSI Afterburner, reseating the GPU, using GPU scheduling in Windows, and even trying the Control Flow Guard workaround. Since your temperatures are similar to others in your situation, it might be an RMA unless you missed something.

If you haven’t already, sharing these steps could help others who haven’t tried them. Good luck with the resolution!

Thanks for your input! I’ve tried all the suggestions you gave, except skipping underclocking since I saw it discussed elsewhere. My main concern is that Nvidia isn’t solving this problem, and I’m really worried about needing to return the card soon because I don’t want to lose my GPU for six months.

I noticed the issue again. The taskbar remains visible but appears completely black. Could you help identify the cause?

I purchased a 3090 model. All other details stayed the same, including the PSU. No more problems now.
