I’d really like to try Star Citizen, but many of my friends mention it runs poorly on most computers because it’s very demanding.
I’m planning to purchase it and wonder if I’d experience too much lag.
Can I play without noticeable delays?
And can it run smoothly at 1080p resolution?

Star Citizen is quite demanding, even on that hardware since it's a rough pre-alpha version. However, it should perform well once it enters beta testing.

also on the notion of star citizen being heavy... does it assist having it on an SSD? does that relate to the aspect of increasing its weight?

By the time the game launches we'll have 7nm AMD chips, 10nm Intel chips, 7nm nVidia and AMD graphics cards available, plus DDR5 and PCI-e 4.0x

Your PC should handle playing Star Citizen without issues. When you play alone in sparsely populated areas, it performs well thanks to OCS (Object Container Streaming) on the client side. We plan to add server-side OCS in the upcoming December update, which should boost performance in resource-intensive areas. The game runs smoothly overall; the main challenge is with the servers right now. Remember, you're using current hardware for a game whose soft release date is likely before 2021. SSD is essential for this title.

The setup needs to perform well enough. Performance varies significantly for Star Citizen due to its current Alpha release. I frequently use ultra high settings at 3440x1440, achieving between 10 and 80 frames per second, mainly influenced by server load and surroundings. My typical rate is around 48.5 fps. I consider it quite usable and have accumulated several hundred hours of gameplay. I play the live version on my M.2 drive using test builds on striped EVO SSDs (SSDs are essential).

This page might offer more details on system performance.

My specifications:
CPU – Ryzen 1800x
Motherboard – Asus Crosshair 6 Hero
RAM – G.skill TridentZ 3200 Mhz 32GB
GPU – Sapphire RX Vega 64 Nitro+ 8GB Limited Edition
Case – Cougar Specialist 02
Storage – 1x Adata 480GB M.2 2x 512gb Samsung 850 EVO SSD Striped
PSU – EVGA 1000w G2 80+Gold
EDIT: System is fully stocked except my GPU runs at 1100Mhz on memory instead of 945Mhz
