Random restarts after installing a new motherboard (MSI PRO B550M-VC WIFI)
Sharing a thread for a friend facing PC troubles currently. Trying to identify the problem through simple checks. Hardware specs provided: MSI PRO B550M-VC, AMD Ryzen 7 5800X, 16GB DDR4 RAM, MSI GTX 1650 650W power supply. They mentioned cooling concerns after replacing the stock cooler from a previous CPU model (3200G). After installing a new NH-D15 cooler, temperatures dropped significantly but the system still randomly restarts to a black screen. No blue screen or Windows restart prompt appears. Suspecting potential software or driver issues rather than hardware faults, especially since they recently transferred their old system's drivers. It's possible the GTX 1650 is drawing too much current from the PCIe bus. Check if your setup includes a 6-pin aux power connector—describe how it connects. If the system powers down abruptly, the issue may relate to the power supply unit, affecting the CPU, motherboard, or graphics card.
It has a six-pin connector, and it fits perfectly when inserted as intended, with no loose spaces and correct connection to the power supply unit.
You can always try reducing the TDP of the 1650 in software such as MSI Afterburner to around 65% to see if it stops random restarts. This might point to a few problems, but at least you have useful information. The same applies when turning on ECO mode in the UEFI/BIOS on your 5800x.
Consider downloading B550 chipset drivers straight from AMD. It might seem unusual, but it’s a good option if you’re new to this process. Many assumptions depend on these drivers for AMD processors. B550 Drivers (amd.com)
