Previously I attempted to upgrade the BIOS on this Crosshair VII Hero WiFi from version 3103 to 4007 using USB Flashback, while running Windows 10 Pro 20H2. I observed some strange behavior, the most notable being random hard reboots. After checking settings, adjusting voltages, removing C-states and clearing configurations, I reset everything and applied optimized defaults. Still, it kept rebooting erratically—no clear explanation. Assuming a faulty BIOS, I reverted to version 3103, and the system functioned normally afterward. Recently, I tried updating to BIOS version 4204 from the same 3103 base. Updated the AMD chipset drivers and ran sfv/scannnow before flashing via USB Flashback. After a short pause, it resumed random hard resets, even performing them within the BIOS itself. When I logged in, it rebooted again, then stabilized afterward. Examining event logs, I found kernel messages indicating a clean shutdown failure and an unexpected system restart. Running SFC /Scannow revealed no issues. I’m puzzled—does it work on the older 3103 BIOS? I haven’t found many detailed discussions about this issue, but it’s possible I’m missing key insights. My plan is to upgrade the CPU and graphics card once they’re available again. Current specs: ROG Crosshair VII Hero WiFi Ryzen 3600x, 16 GB Gskill F4-3866C18D-8GTZ, Samsung B-Die Corsair HX1000i, AMD Radeon R9 390X, NVMe M.2 WD Black SN750. Anyone have advice?

Because your setup isn't using a Vermeer chip, updating to 4204 isn't necessary. Vermeer compatibility begins at revision 4007. Keep using the 3103 model until you're prepared to replace the CPU.

What stands out is that Bios 4204 is intended to fully back Matisse on the Crosshair VII Hero, and it includes several updates for the CPU running Matisse on the Crosshair VII Hero. The most important fix I noticed is the resolution of random CPU spikes that made the fans spin—this was a known issue with the 3103 chipset. There are also a few other smaller improvements. I've recorded all these changes while testing 4204. Just because the core support for Vermeer is available doesn't mean Matisse on the Crosshair VII Hero isn't receiving updates either. I'd rather not end up with the same issues as the Vermeer 5900x CPU. I'm hoping for more than just "if it doesn't work, don't use it."

I found out that in the Crosshair VII Hero Bios 4204 with the Matisse 3000 series, the CPU Overtempmax setting is too low. Reports indicate issues at 20°C+ and it may trigger an emergency shutdown. The only workaround so far is to disable CPU temperature monitoring, which seems risky.
