I've encountered an unusual problem and am struggling to figure out the cause. I recently installed a new computer and it generally runs smoothly while playing games. However, some games frequently crash to the desktop without any warning signs. There seems to be no consistent pattern. My initial suspicion was related to RAM, as the system operates well under light usage. I don’t experience any issues when the games are running at full settings. When they start, everything functions properly until the unexpected crash occurs. I decided to test the RAM myself using memtest86. The first test showed an error during a hammering test (test 13). At first, I thought it was resolved, then I checked each stick separately. Surprisingly, both tested without any errors. I also tried placing them in different slots, but the issue remained. Both dual-channel configurations still produced the same error during testing. My main question is why my RAM sticks pass individual tests but fail when used together. I’m not sure if this explains the desktop crashes, but it’s my best guess at the moment. It feels like the computer abruptly ends these games without explanation. The hardware specs include an Asus Strix B-450F motherboard, an 8GB DDR4 G-Skill Trident Z Neo, an AMD Ryzen 7 3700X, a stock cooler, a Gigabyte gaming OC-RTX 2070, and a Super Evga 650G PSU.

Check if your motherboard includes four expansion slots. If yes, consider using slots 2 and 4. Would you like to connect another monitor to view your system?

I've tested in slots 1, 2, 3, and 4. The only configurations that support dual channel are those two. I've checked my performance during matches using msi afterburner and found no unusual issues before crashes. Thermals are working properly.

I suggest trying slots 2 and 4. They should enable dual-channel RAM operation, which might resolve the crashing issue. Consider testing it and performing a stress test.

It’s important to verify that all necessary drivers are set up in Device Manager. This might seem simple, but it’s a good habit for beginners. Keep an eye on temperatures and confirm everything stays within safe limits. The stock coolers on Ryzen usually perform well, but checking all temps is wise.

Some brands and even certain specialized boards differ—such as the updated Rev 1.1 version of my Aorus X570, which removed caps near the dimming ports to enable more direct traces, enhancing memory overclocking performance. I suggest monitoring your SOC voltage; the 3000 series supports up to 1.2V, though I wouldn’t go beyond unless you’re aiming for record speeds. I’d try 1.1V instead, which kept my 3800MHz stable and within normal ranges. I saved a detailed guide on RAM voltage stability from Tweaktown for this reason.

Second, consider adjusting your SOC voltage to 1.1V—this worked well for me and is safe for most builds. If you’re testing extreme timings or need peak performance, you might explore 1.4V, but be cautious as some tests ran Ryzen CPUs near 1.4V. For reference, I found a reliable RAM test on Karhu that covered voltage stability.

Keep an eye on temperatures; the B-Die becomes unstable above 50°C, which can trigger errors. Poor airflow often worsens this, especially during intense gaming when heat rises from your GPU and affects RAM. I think the issue might be related to the IMC, based on the memtest data, and I agree with increasing the voltage connected to it to improve its performance with dual sticks.

Some premium neo sticks (without details on speeds or CAS latency) require a higher stock voltage since G.Skill aimed to offer cutting-edge options that AMD and Intel enthusiasts would quickly adopt. Earlier versions often used 1.45V sticks, so confirm the labels on the sticks or packaging to ensure they match the intended voltages. If they’re undervolted but running XMP timings, that could also account for the issues. I truly hope these recommendations address your concerns and help you run your stress-free titles.
