Hello everyone! I've noticed black squares appearing on my screen intermittently over the past few months. I'm not sure when this began, but it's been ongoing for at least a couple of months. It's worth noting that I experienced an outage in December which caused one of my SSDs to fail (showing RAW data), and maybe this incident could have affected other parts without me realizing it. Since the damaged SSD isn't connected anymore, I haven't had time to investigate further. This article focuses on the random black squares showing up. I've installed the newest Nvidia, Windows 10, motherboard firmware, and CPU drivers. I added an image to illustrate how these squares might appear. When I move my mouse, they disappear. I also included them in Paint since I can't take screenshots, but they look like solid black squares similar to the example. Hardware: CPU Ryzen 5 5600 (non-x version), Motherboard Gigabyte B550 Aorus Elite V2, RAM Corsair Vengeance LPX Black 16GB (2x8GB) / 3200MHz / DDR4 / CL16 / CMK16GX4M2B3200C16, GPU Gigabyte GTX 1660 Ti (GV-N166TWF2OC-6GD), Storage Kingston A2000 M.2 250GB, Kingston NV2 1TB PSU Seasonic Focus+ / 550W / 80+ Gold, OS Windows 10.
In a Chrome browser running with an NVIDIA GPU, occasional black squares may appear. A possible fix involves adjusting certain Chrome settings, though I’m unsure of the exact options available. It seems this issue is specific to Chrome and possibly other browsers using it in the background. If it occurs elsewhere, the cause might differ.
It's a GPU that's four years old. I've been considering an upgrade, but Nvidia cards are quite expensive and some alternatives have poor RAM specs. I'm aiming for at least $700 to get a Nvidia card with more than 8GB of memory (4070 or higher). The 4060ti offers better value locally, though it only has 8GB in the regular version. The 16GB model would be closer to a good choice. I'm holding off on upgrading right now, hoping for better deals on the 4070 or even the 4070 Super in the future. The issue also appears outside Chrome.
Unless those items rely on Chrome/Edge or comparable platforms, they likely differ from standard behavior. Nonetheless, if you wish to attempt a solution, the guidance is provided specifically for users who encounter it while watching videos, though it may also occur with other web content.
Thanks in advance! I'll check it out later. It seems quite alike to what I receive.
I think we fixed the problem! Follow the steps from the previous comment: open Chrome, go to flags, search for ANGLE, set it to OpenGL as default, and then restart the browser. Now there are no more black squares after two hours.
