Two sticks per channel unlock single-rank advantages. The key takeaway: it doesn’t really matter much. Prioritize dual channel first, then speed, latency, and finally ranking. Using two "single-rank" dimms in separate controllers only offers the dual-channel benefit, not the extra perks of multiple ranks.
Accepted, but this simply indicates you're limiting your performance chances, especially if you plan to expand capacity later. Relying solely on a larger existing setup and switching to a bigger kit isn't ideal—two sticks remain the optimal choice. Four slots are mainly for giving users a sense of future upgrade potential, which is often wasted.
The biggest challenge when boosting a dual-rank configuration isn't the IMC, but rather the motherboard's electrical layout in the memory area. Personally, my 2C model only reaches stable speeds around 1866 with four sticks, but drops to about 2000 with two. It can hit 2100 at full load and runs smoothly at 2100/1:1. Compared to a 4-stick setup, performance is similar, though you need to rely more on the hardware. It's unlikely many will invest time in mastering this. On the other hand, my 5900X handles four sticks well up to 1900, but two sticks don't improve clock stability beyond 1900—though it has reached 2000. I believe CCD2 isn't very promising based on my tests. Also, MSI shows compatible speeds for single and dual configurations, which I haven't noticed others doing.
