Hello, Your current ATX motherboard only supports 2133MHz RAM. You're planning to upgrade to 16GB of 3000MHz RAM and are considering a used mini-ITX motherboard that fits this speed. I heard some rumors about Intel i7-6700 handling 3000MHz RAM, but I'm curious if that's accurate. Is there really a significant difference between 2133MHz and 3000MHz RAM? Thanks.

It seems the i7 6700 works with DDR4 at up to 2133MHz. In practice, speed changes don’t usually cause big issues, though I don’t switch back and forth much. Upgrading to 3000MHz RAM could be smart for future compatibility if you plan to upgrade later. Running RAM slower than the clock speed isn’t typically a problem.

What kind of motherboard are you running? The 2133MHz setting is the typical baseline, while most boards support 2400-2666MHz for OC'd memory. Even with a 3000MHz RAM stick, it will only operate at 2133MHz unless you activate XMP/DOCP or tweak the voltage manually.
