Hey all, I recently spoke to someone who works at Chillblast (a big PC build company in the UK) who basically said I shouldn't be looking for RAM that's higher than 3200MHz (even with XMP turned on) because it makes the system unstable. Is that generally true? Assuming the other parts are high-end (3090 GPU, 5950X CPU, good cooling, etc.), can faster RAM really make the system unstable?

It varies based on the specific RAM, CPU, and motherboard setup. Generally, exceeding 3200MHz tends to be more challenging.

Using an XMP profile essentially acts as an overclock, functioning similarly. Raising CPU or GPU speeds typically requires higher voltage to keep everything stable. The CPU decides the speed at which memory operates. The board also assists, though not to the extent you might expect.

Don't think it's impossible. Look at the QVL on the motherboard page and the memory page. I double-checked both pairs before buying them. My 3200C14 went to 4200C14, and I might have pushed 4600 C16 once. But I could be wrong. 4400 C16 is definitely a possibility. Regarding performance, I have no idea if I'd expect anything between 1800-2k fclk.

I can handle 2100 MHz consistently, but stability isn’t guaranteed. Running at 2000 MHz is stable enough for testing. My 3600XT won’t push beyond around 1900 MHz on that board.
