Hello my computer friends.
I have a query about the best setup.
My PC uses an Asus Tuf Gaming B550 motherboard with dual slots, which I refer to as channel mode.
It has two different color options, but my CPU is a Ryzen 5 3600.
I currently have 16GB of RAM, split into two 8GB modules using DDR4 3200MHz.
I’m considering upgrading to 32GB of RAM, possibly buying more 2x8GB sticks from the manufacturer.
I’m unsure if this will improve performance or if it will actually work.
The motherboard manual doesn’t mention dual or quad RAM configurations—just A1/A2 or B1/B2.
I’ve seen some videos suggesting that using two slots is better, while others say it won’t affect performance if the board supports four slots.
I’m feeling uncertain about the right choice. Should I opt for two 16GB sticks or add another pair of 2x8GB modules to reach 32GB?

Irrespective of whether the RAM is identical, the IC chips on the memory PCB board can vary during manufacturing. Therefore, it's best to stick with a fixed amount, purchased in a package together as they are tested for compatibility. I suggest opting for the two-stick configuration. Always use A2/B2 slots for dual-channel setups, as this applies to Intel boards too and every board with four DIMM slots. Second and fourth CPU slots should be reserved.

Your CPU includes two internal IMC channels, while the motherboard provides four DIMM slots. Each IMC is linked to a set of two slots, resulting in a total of two channels and four slots available.

You have three ways to configure the CPU:
1) Use DIMMs in slots A2 and B2, with A1 and B1 unused (ideal for two DIMMs)
2) Use DIMMs in slots B1 and B2, with A2 and B2 empty
3) Use DIMMs in slots B1 and B2 plus a second pair in A2 and B2

If you install only one DIMM in any of the four slots, the remaining three slots will remain empty, causing the system to operate in Single Channel mode.

As noted by @boju, adding a second pair of DIMMs isn’t the best choice since they won’t match the first pair exactly, even if they share the same part number. For four DIMMs, it’s more efficient to purchase all four as a matched set rather than two separate kits of two.

Another drawback is that running four DIMMs might limit the ability to apply the same XMP overclock settings as with two DIMMs working together. While two DIMMs can typically run at 3200MT/s, four may require manual adjustment to 2933MT/s. The increased number of DIMMs places greater demand on the CPU’s IMCs.

The optimal solution is to opt for a pair of 16GB DIMMs (totaling 32GB) and retire the older 8GB units. As mentioned, two DIMMs usually achieve faster XMP speeds compared to four, due to bus load differences.

If you’re comfortable making BIOS tweaks to stabilize XMP overclocking and willing to test stability with a MemTest86 USB drive, consider buying a second kit of two 8GB units. However, be prepared for potential instability at 3200MT/s or boot failures.

Running four DIMMs at the default JEDEC speed (DDR4 2133 or 2400MT/s) without enabling XMP will generally perform adequately.

Thank you both for your support. I plan to purchase a 2x16 kit and, as you mentioned, I can sell them or keep them as a backup if needed. One more thing before we wrap up this help topic: I’m currently using a 3200 DDR4 system with this motherboard. Can I upgrade to something else so I have the option to upgrade my CPU later? Would it be possible for the 3200 to remain in use for another five years?

and i like RGB lights xD.. I have in my mind to get a better CPU 5800x was the 1 cross my mind since is okey with the price and it fits to my whole setup.
