In most situations I’m okay with that, but improving to 5-10 fps by swapping to 4 x 8 MB instead of 2 x 16 MB seems worth considering. I was wondering if anyone has any insights on this.

It looks like you're referring to a small variation in frames per second, around 0-1 fps, especially noticeable on the edges. This happens when the frame rate is low and only becomes noticeable at higher speeds. The trade-off here is complexity.
